OFCOM announces automatic compensation for delays to phone and broadband fix

OFCOM announces automatic compensation for delays to phone and broadband fix

Ofcom says mobile customers aren't covered by the new automatic compensation scheme as they are less likely to lose service for more than 24 hours, and now receive more compensation than broadband and landline customers.

Ofcom says that following its intervention, BT, Sky, Talk Talk, Virgin Media and Zen Internet - which collectively account for 90% of the market - have all agreed to the initiative, along with EE and Plusnet.

New customers can also benefit.

Ofcom said that, overall, they expect compensation levels to increase around nine fold.

Ofcom says compensation is now only paid out for around one in seven broadband or landline problems, and at the moment customers who are given compensation only receive an average £3.69 a day for loss of service, and £2.39 a day for delayed installations.

Ofcom's behind it all, saying it could lead to the ISPs paying out £142m in compensation payouts for missed appointments, slow repairs and messed up connections, when the scheme launches in 2019.

As for Sky, Capacity reached out for a statement but no official comment has been given.

Ofcom consumer group director Lindsey Fussell said: "Waiting too long for your landline or broadband to be fixed is frustrating enough, without having to fight for compensation".

The automatic compensation plans, nine times higher than the current level, are meant to benefit millions of people who suffer from poor service. And more providers are expected to sign up further down the line. But by 2019, United Kingdom customers can expect timely fixes for the broadband ... or automatic money back in their accounts. If one of the included ISPs says that your broadband or landline will be connected on a specific day and misses that date, then you'll get £5 for each day you aren't connected, including the missed starting date.

Alex Neill, Which? Managing Director of Home Services, said: "We are pleased that compensation for poor broadband is going to become automatic, as it is now such an essential part of all of our everyday lives". The regulator says it will monitor the scheme and review it a year after implementation to make sure it is working for customers otherwise it will step in.

The automatic compensation scheme is set to come into force in 2019.

"When in place these measures should go some way towards ensuring consumers are fairly compensated both for days taken off work to wait for engineers who never arrive, and for days spent without service", Mr Howdle said.
