Russian Federation to amend law to classify media as 'foreign agents'

Russian Federation to amend law to classify media as 'foreign agents'

The Justice Department gave RT America, the US arm of the Russian company, until Monday to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, RT's editor said Thursday.

She said RT would challenge the demand by the US Department of Justice in court. "The demand is discriminative, it contradicts both the democracy and freedom of speech principles".

The Duma is obliged to give its laws two preliminary approvals before passing them, which Volodin said could happen next week.

State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said lawmakers will take up changes to the Russian law on foreign agents to extend it to the media.

"Our law on foreign agents doesn't apply to media but since they are taking such measures against our channels in the USA, we should respond to these unfriendly acts", Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the lower house of parliament, said Friday in comments posted on the State Duma's website.

Volodin said Russian Federation could extend its own law on foreign agents to foreign media in response to Washington's "hostile" actions.

"These are not media, but propaganda tools with 100 percent funding from the USA budget", Pushkov was quoted as saying.

"Every media now has its own pages in social networks, which also publish their news, articles and videos. It deprives us of fair competition with other global channels, which are not registered as foreign agents". "Our lawyers say that if we don't register as a foreign agent, the director of our company in America could be arrested, and the accounts of the company could be seized".

Washington has been fighting what it calls a barrage of "fake news" from Russian media, including RT and the Sputnik news agency, which it says is aimed at interfering in USA domestic politics.

"The Russian side has repeatedly warned that any measures limiting activity of the Russian mass media in the United States will inevitably trigger an immediate symmetrical response, as provided for in the Russian legislation", the Russian Embassy in the U.S.

"Our law on foreign agents does not apply to media".

Last Thursday, Twitter announced it would drop advertising by RT and Sputnik-owned accounts on its network due to their alleged meddling in the US presidential election a year ago.

The Kremlin has even taken aim at privately owned CNN, which has been the subject of criticism from Russia, for what the government views as anti-Russian reporting. "We consider its demand as a wish to eliminate an alternative source of information, which is an unacceptable violation of the worldwide norms of free press".
