Area salute: Parades, ceremonies to commemorate Veterans Day

For the 76th year, Charleston residents will honor those who served in the armed forces at city's Veterans Day Parade, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Mayor Jake Windham spoke during the ceremony.

Members of local veterans organizations and supporters walked along the parade route while thousands of spectators lined Civic Center Park and nearby streets to show respect and honor for our veterans. We'll be involved in the parade downtown tomorrow morning, and then we are hosting a veterans dinner tomorrow between 4 and 6 p.m. Following the ceremony, a luncheon for veterans is at East End United Methodist Church on the corner of East Main and Fairground Street. Guest speaker will be Alice Kraatz, 12, who initiated the effort to include MI with other states that have a Vietnam Veterans Day.

Several public places were closed on Friday in observance of Veterans Day, but on Saturday the U.S. Post Office will not be delivering mail. The keynote speaker will be former Navy SEAL Rob Foley. A wreath-laying ceremony will be at Meetinghouse Park across from the courthouse to honor veterans of World War II, the Civil War and the Gulf War to present.

The parade was followed by a brief ceremony in front of Mooresville town hall, lunch and a concert on the town hall lawn.

- Marietta will hold a parade at 10 a.m.
