US, S. Korea begin joint Naval drills

US, S. Korea begin joint Naval drills

SEOUL-South Korea will join three USA aircraft carrier strike groups in a joint drill scheduled for November 11 to 14, the South's military said on Friday.

The leaders "shared the view on the need to stably manage the current security condition on the Korean Peninsula in relation to North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and agreed to peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear issue through dialogue", Seoul's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said of the meeting between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier arrives in the South Korean port city of Busan on October 21, 2017.

Seven South Korean navy vessels - three destroyers and four escort ships - will take part in the exercises, the South Korean official said.

The drills began in waters off South Korea's eastern coast.

Three U.S. aircraft carriers - USS Nimitz, USS Kitty Hawk, and USS John C. Stennis - steam in formation during a 2007 training exercise in the Western Pacific in this photo released by the 7th Fleet.

They will aim to enhance combined operation and aerial strike capabilities and also display "strong will and firm military readiness to defeat any provocation by North Korea with dominant force in the event of crisis", Seoul's military said in a statement.

The objective of the exercise was to demonstrate the U.S. Navy's ability to "operate multiple carrier strike groups as a coordinated strike force efforts", the navy said, adding that the three carrier strike groups will conduct training including "air defense drills, sea surveillance, replenishment at sea, defensive air combat training, close-in coordinated maneuver".

In recent months, North Korea has tested intercontinental ballistic missiles that could reach the US mainland with further development and has conducted its most powerful nuclear test.

President Trump's exchange of threats and insults with Pyongyang has done nothing to curb regional tensions and with South Korea and China suited either side of the hermit state, it is in their interests not to push for military action.
