Yemen says Saudi-led coalition to allow commercial flights

Yemen says Saudi-led coalition to allow commercial flights

Yemeni men and security forces in Aden, Yemen, November 5, 2017.

The Saudi-led military coalition fighting against the Houthi movement in Yemen has reopened a land border crossing, easing a blockade imposed on the country earlier this week, a Yemeni official and witnesses said on Friday.

Warplanes continued to circle in the skies above Sanaa after the strikes, the witnesses added.

It wasn't immediately clear if the attacks were air or missile strikes, but they came following reports that Iran had manufactured the ballistic missile fired by Yemen's Shiite rebels toward the Saudi capital a week ago. There was no word of any casualties.

The coalition had said it closed all air, land and sea ports to the Arabian Peninsula country to stem the flow of arms to the Houthis from Iran.

'The coalition re-opened Aden and Seiyoun airports, ' said Murad al-Halimi, the transport minister of the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, according to Saudi broadcaster Al Arabiya.

The United Nations had warned that a total blockade could cause a starvation that could kill millions in Yemen, where 2-1/2 years of war has killed at least 10,000 people and unleashed starvation and disease in the already impoverished country.

Local resident Mohammed Aatif said: 'I was sitting at home and heard the first strike hit the ministry of defence. Medical experts also warn that the blockade will worsen the country's cholera outbreak, which has affected nearly 1 million people.
