Goodell seeks $50 million, private jet for life

Goodell seeks $50 million, private jet for life

In his most recent counterproposal to the Compensation Committee regarding his next contract as commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell in August sought almost a $50 million salary and lifetime private jet usage and healthcare for his family, according to ESPN.

"One NFL owner told ESPN that there are 'several owners in this league who don't make $40 million a year.' The owner was referring to the salaries that owners take, which does not include the increase in valuations that each NFL franchise has undergone", the two ESPN insiders noted.

The alleged details come out one day before the committee will hold a conference call to try to finalize the Goodell extension, which Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been adamantly against, to the tune of threatening the National Football League with litigation.

Those owners surely hope that the group grows, and leaks like this one won't hurt that effort.

One of Goodell's most vocal detractors has been Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys owner who recently lost star running back Ezekiel Elliott to a six-game suspension that was spearheaded by the commissioner and his disciplinary committee.

"Everyone should remember at the spring meeting in Chicago, 32 owners - 32-0, a unanimous vote - authorized the compensation committee to enter into negotiations and offer the commissioner an extension to his contract of five years to 2024". He has achieved a significant cache within the NFL in making the Cowboys one of the most valued commodities in all of global sports, but that is quickly eroding, according to numerous league and ownership sources. Specifically, Jones is worth $5.6 billion and has seen himself accrue this worth primarily during Goodell's tenure as NFL Commissioner. "It's offensive. It's unseemly". "He's not going to resign; he's not going to take a pay cut".

Yet there are issues that others owners aside from Jones are aware of, and they are wrestling now with how to best handle it. This is just an absurd amount of money, and it leads me to believe that Jerry Jones attempted coup of Goodell might come to fruition.
