Iran ballistic missile programme non-negotiable

Iran ballistic missile programme non-negotiable

She said a missile shot down over Saudi Arabia on Saturday "may also be of Iranian origin".

Later in the day, Macron made a surprise visit to Saudi Arabia, where he said he was "very concerned" about Iran's ballistic missile program, adding, "There are negotiations we need to start on Iran's ballistic missiles".

"We would like to see sanctions on Iran for its support of terrorism and sanctions on Iran for violating the ballistic missile resolutions of the United Nations", Adel Al-Jubeir, Saudi minister of foreign affairs, told CNBC Thursday.

"Meanwhile, France is fully aware of Iran's firm stance towards its defense capabilities, viewing it as non-negotiable", Foreign Ministry's official website quoted him as saying.

The president proposed revising the Iran nuclear deal of 2015, saying it "must be preserved", but "complemented with two pillars", which would include "a negotiation on the ballistic activity of Iran, with sanctions if necessary, " and a discussion on "restraining Iranian hegemony in the region".

"We have told French officials repeatedly that the nuclear deal is not negotiable and other issues will not be allowed to be added to it".

Saudi Arabia long has accused Iran of giving weapons to the Shiite rebels known as Houthis and their allies, though Tehran has just as long denied supplying them. Paris, according to the spokesman, should remain "realistic, fair and farsighted" over "sensitive developments in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf regions".

Iran says its missile programme is defensive and it has no plans to build nuclear-capable missiles.

The United States Congress now has 60 days to reimpose nuclear sanctions.

While U.S. President Donald Trump decertified the agreement and imposed sanctions on the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. This came after "its [Iran's] Houthi proxy" in Yemen fired a missile towards the Saudi capital last week.

The Yemeni army on November 5 confirmed that it had targeted Saudi Arabia's King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a long-range Borkan H2 ballistic missile.
