Vandeweghe leads U.S. to 18th FedCup title

Vandeweghe leads U.S. to 18th FedCup title

The hard-hitting Vandeweghe again stood out in the 6-3, 7-6 (3) doubles victory over the Belarus team of Aryna Sabalenka and Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

The Americans won a record 17th Fed Cup title in 2000, with King as captain. She finished 2017 with eight Fed Cup wins, including the maximum six Fed Cup singles victories.

The class of the American squad, missing Serena and Venus Williams, eventually told as Vandeweghe and Rogers came from behind in the second set to win in straight sets. Rogers won both of her service points in the tiebreaker for a 3-2 edge and then delivered a backhand volley victor against Sabalenka's service point for a 4-2 advantage for the Americans.

U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens will then play Aryna Sabalenka.

Kathy Rinaldi, in her first season as the US captain, is trying to become the first since Billie Jean King to lead a winning Fed Cup squad.

It is the first USA victory since the team of Lisa Raymond, Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati in 2000.

So, the final of the Federation Cup starts on Saturday at 14.00.The beginning of the first match is 14:30 -. She is the first player to win eight matches since the current eight-team World Group format was introduced in 2005.

"CoCo came out and just played unbelievable", U.S. Fed Cup captain Kathy Rinaldi said.

Stephens had lost six matches since winning the U.S. Open in September.

Stephens served for the match against Sasnovich at 5-3 in the third set, but was unable to clinch the title for the United States.

In the second set Belarus team was leading 5-2, wasted two set points on 5-4, served to take it to a decider on 6-5 but United States prevailed in the tie-break dominating.

Sabalenka led 4-1 in the tiebreaker but surrendered her lead to a more measured Vandeweghe, who clinched the first set when the Belarussian blasted a forehand wide while going for a victor.

"I know she was going to keep swinging", Vandeweghe said.

In the first match of the day and third of the tie, Vandeweghe saved a set point and rallied from a 4-1 tiebreak deficit to defeat Aryna Sabalenka, 7-6 (5), 6-1 and put the United States of America one point away from the win.

"She did what she's supposed to do and did what I expected her to do - just swing and pray for it to go in and she did".
