Trump Chooses Alex Azar for Health and Human Services Secretary

The nomination of Alex Azar is unusual because HHS secretaries have tended to come from the ranks of elected officials such as governors, leaders in academia and medicine, or top executive branch managers - not industries regulated by the department.

US President Donald Trump has nominated a former pharmaceutical executive to serve as his next health secretary.

Azar II, served as a deputy at the department under former President George W. Bush.

Azar is a former pharmaceutical executive and worked for top company Eli Lilly for almost a decade, becoming president of Lilly USA in 2011.

Mr. Trump made his announcement in a Twitter post while traveling in Asia. Price resigned from the position in September following a scandal over his use of private jets that reportedly cost taxpayers more than $1 million.

Alex Azar has spent most of the past 10 years with pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly.

The new HHS secretary will be tasked with implementing Trump administration efforts to unwind Obamacare, a top campaign promise of his, and overseeing the drug industry, which Trump has said is "getting away with murder" by charging high prices for prescription medications. In an October letter to Trump, Sens.

Azar has served on the board of directors of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, a drug industry lobby, for several years, and his nomination would raise questions about the administration's seriousness about lowering drug prices.

He'll be working with FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb, another industry insider now in charge of regulating the business.
