North Korean defector was shot six times by border troops: UNC

North Korean defector was shot six times by border troops: UNC

A North Korean soldier defected across the demilitarized zone that divided the two Koreas on Monday afternoon, in a rare incident at the truce village of Panmunjeom, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"What the president is trying to do right now is recognize that the gravest threat that America faces is North Korea developing nuclear weapons".

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the defector drove a auto into the northern side of the JSA before approaching an area just 10 meters (33 feet) from the Military Demarcation Line (MDL).

But there was no direct exchange of gunfire between South and North Korean guards in the process.

It was not immediately known how serious the soldier's injuries were or why he made a decision to defect.

A North Korean soldier defected to the South by driving a vehicle to the line that divides the peninsula, then sprinting across it as his former comrades opened fire, the United Nations Command said Tuesday.

North Korean soldiers have occasionally defected to South Korea across the border.

"They really want to know what is his end game", said DiMaggio, a scholar at New America who specializes in talking with rogue regimes and has spent almost two decades in secret discussions with the North Koreans.

This makes the area a popular stop for visitors from both sides.

Unlike the rest of the frontier, Panmunjom is not fortified with minefields and barbed wire and the border is marked only by a low concrete divider.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff official said he was found collapsed in a pile of fallen leaves and recovered by three South Korean soldiers crawling on their stomachs to his position. After being shot, he took cover near a building on the southern side of the JSA before South Korean and American troops came to his aid.

North Korea has not commented on the shooting, but it usually responds angrily to defections and often accuses South Korea of kidnapping its citizens.

Another gun battle was recorded in 1967 when a senior journalist from the North's state-run KCNA news agency crossed the border while covering military talks underway in Panmunjom.
