Rocket Issue Delays Launch of Advanced New JPSS-1 Weather Satellite

Rocket Issue Delays Launch of Advanced New JPSS-1 Weather Satellite

The booster will carry the first in a series of four satellites for the Joint Polar Satellite System, JPSS-1.

"We're pretty excited about the launch", said Joe Pica, director of the weather service's office of operations, who added the spacecraft is created to last about seven years.

JPSS-1 is planned to be placed into a non-geosynchronous polar orbit that will allow for a almost complete coverage of the entire Earth's surfaces twice in each 24-hour period with state-of-the-art instruments that are expected to aid meteorologists and other scientists and researchers to better predict severe weather phenomena such as hurricanes up to seven days ahead of the incident.

The satellite, called JPSS-1, will provide meteorologists with a variety of observations, such as atmospheric temperature and moisture, sea-surface temperature, ocean color, sea ice cover, volcanic ash and fire detection. It was created to be the functional equivalent follow-on to the Advanced Microwave Sounder Units with improved sampling and coverage.

The spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace and involves a collaboration between NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Maue said that without data from polar satellites, "weather forecasts would noticeably suffer leading to more forecast busts, wayward hurricane tracks and more difficulty in preparing for severe weather". NOAA funds and manages the program, operations and data products.

According to Space.com, JPSS-1 is meant to build off the work of other NOAA satellites.

NASA says the rocket had only a 66-second launch window.

The mission is scheduled to begin at 4:47 a.m. EST (1:47 a.m. PST), Nov. 10, 2017, with JPSS-1 atop a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Delta II rocket lifting off from Space Launch Complex 2 (SLC-2) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems built the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder and the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System instrument.

The launch has been tentatively postponed 24 hours and is now set to liftoff at 1:47 a.m. Wednesday.

Polar satellites like the JPSS-1, which orbit the globe from pole-to-pole 14 times a day, are considered the backbone of the global observing system.
