Tanks seen on road to Zimbabwe capital amid political crisis

Several armoured vehicles drove down main roads near the Zimbabwean capital Harare Tuesday, as tension erupted between President Robert Mugabe and the military that has been a key buttress to his 37-year reign.

Mnangagwa had clashed repeatedly with First Lady Grace Mugabe, 52, who was widely seen as vying with him to succeed her 93-year-old husband as president.

This photo taken November 8, 2017, shows Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, left, addressing party members and supporters to show support to Grace Mugabe, right, becoming the party's next vice president after the dismissal of Emerson Mnangagwa.

This comes a day after a statement by army generals urged President Robert Mugabe to cease purges within his ruling party or "the military would be forced to intervene".

ZANU-PF said Chiwenga's stance was "clearly calculated to disturb national peace. and suggests treasonable conduct on his part as this was meant to incite insurrection".

Moyo said ZANU-PF will never succumb to the military's threats as they were inconsistent with the tenets of democracy and constitutionalism.

A number of people posted images of the military vehicles on social media.

Some of the army top brass are seen as strongly opposed to Grace Mugabe's apparent emergence as the likely next president. Fears of some sort of revolt grew over the last few hours after several army tanks were spotted headed for the capital, and major arteries out of Harare were closed.

"We very rarely see tanks on the roads", Derek Matyszak, an analyst at the Pretoria-based Institute for Security Studies, told AFP. However, there is speculation that this could also be a show of force from the military.

Mnangagwa was subsequently fired from the party and has since left the country.

"As a result of squabbling within the ranks of Zanu-PF, there has been no meaningful development in the country for the past five years".

He quoted the constitution to justify the military's interest in what was happening in the ruling party, saying that the military provided government with various forms of assistance as provided for by the supreme law.

Chiwenga said if this happens, the military will interject and stop the process.

"The current purging. targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith".

Grace, now poised to become a vice president, did not fight in the liberation war.
