There's a lot Jeff Sessions 'can't recall' about Russian Federation contacts

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions says he now recalls a meeting with then-candidate Donald Trump and aides where campaign connections to Russian Federation were discussed, despite earlier testifying that he was unaware of any such contacts.

The comment by Sessions to a House of Representatives panel did not reveal any new link between the Trump team and Russian Federation but it was another example of the top USA law enforcement official offering a different version of events as lawmakers try to work out if the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation in the 2016 election. Months later, the Washington Post revealed that Sessions had met with the Russian ambassador to the United States multiple times during the 2016 campaign. He said he mentioned in passing to Sessions that he was visiting Russian Federation and the then-senator had no reaction.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee pressed Mr. Sessions to explain whether he was pressured to restart investigations targeting President Trump's former democratic rival.

But while the Mueller-led special counsel team meanders, there is uncertainty about whether issues like the Uranium One deal and fusion Global Positioning System will receive a thorough investigation.

The Justice Department on November 14 informed the House committee that it was looking into whether a special independent counsel should be appointed.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will testify on Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee, where he is likely to face questions on Russia's election interference.

In his confirmation hearing in January, Sessions had pledged to senators he would recuse himself from matters involving Clinton, given his involvement with the Trump campaign. "Each of those are pretty special, factual situations", Sessions said, "and we will use the proper standards".

"Attorney General Sessions has misrepresented the truth ... time and time again", Al Franken, a Democratic Senate Judiciary Committee member, said on the Senate floor on Monday. If so, the Clintons could be investigated through normal Justice Department channels, although ironically that might be more dubious politically for Trump and Sessions than a special counsel would be.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions may have just thrown a wrench into GOP plans to open a new federal investigation of Hillary Clinton.

Sessions grew angry in response, repeating that he had never lied under oath.

During the March 2016 campaign meeting where Russia was discussed, Sessions shut down Papadopoulos' idea of engaging with Russian contacts, according to a source familiar with the matter.

It also comes a day after the Justice Department told the chair of the committee, Rep. But he said he had no memory of that conversation.

The letter follows comments made by President Donald Trump on November 3 when he expressed disappointment in the Justice Department.

In April 2015, The New York Times published an article echoing much of the Schweizer book, including one sensational contention that not long after the Russians said they wanted to acquire a majority stake in Uranium One, Bill Clinton received $500,000 for a speech in Moscow.
