Finally Home: National Adoption Day in CT

Finally Home: National Adoption Day in CT

Thursday was National Adoption Day, and the Vanderburgh County Courthouse welcomed in all who were ready to make their families complete. There wasn't a dry eye in the courtroom for the 13-year-old's adoption ceremony.

Beyond the official count, the agency assisted with two other adoptions in MS, and DHR staffers themselves adopted six children over the past year.

The division investigates troubled homes and gives parents designated periods of time to fix problems before they seek a court order to place the child in a foster home, said Jane Phillips, a Union County court services supervisor and coordinator of Adoption Day. With our partners in the private sector, we work hard to find the right fit, the right family to foster and sometimes adopt our children. Cullman County now has 51 children waiting.

For every sticker posted to the adoption tree, for every happy story, there's one waiting to be told, and you don't have to wait till next national adoption day.

Smith told The Tribune that Cullman County now has around 200 children in foster care, with 51 of those waiting to be adopted.

"We have been waiting for this for about 5 years".

Smith talked to The Tribune about what leads children into foster care. Sadly, many children are not adopted. We're seeing a lot of that.

Her youngest daughter is no longer able to take care of her son and Hernandez was determined he wouldn't end up in the foster care system.

Becoming a foster parent is often a first step in the adoption process. You may also friend me, Assemblyman Barclay, on Facebook. "They really love each other".

Chaney shared, "We're fortunate to live in such a tremendous community that values children".

Either family members of the child or an unrelated family then go through weeks of training and allow themselves and their homes to be investigated before they can adopt. You can't put a price on that.

"I want her to know what a blessing she is for us and we feel like she is a gift", James said.

"We call them our kids", Bell said. For many, when the bell rings to signify the formal adoption, the moment of joy is one they will never forget. "You have my respect, and I thank you".
