Fiji stun New Zealand in historic World Cup upset

Fiji stun New Zealand in historic World Cup upset

The victory marks Fiji's first-ever win against a tier-one nation and caps a miserable tournament for the Kiwis, who were booted from the quarter-finals a week after becoming the first top-three nation ever to lose to a second-tier side.

New Zealand have been dumped out of the World Cup by Fiji in one of the biggest worldwide upsets in recent memory.

New Zealand halfback Shaun Johnson levelled up the scores from the kicking tee five minutes after the break but the hosts were unable to build on that as winger Jordan Rapana was sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul two minutes later.

But any hopes they would build on that effort were dashed as Milne accepted the offer of two points after more Kiwi indiscipline.

Fiji now meet Australia in the semi final, while Kiwi boss David Kidwell is expected to resign or get the sack.

In the 10 games under Kidwell since he took over September a year ago, the Kiwis have won three, drawn one and lost six.

Full-back Naiqama was named man of the match and he gave an emotional post-match interview.

"I didn't get any sleep last night and really thought about what I want to do, what I want to achieve".

"I am so proud of these boys". I never stopped believing.

"I don't think (there was any more we could have done)". We laid the foundations in '08 and we have seen the fruits in 2017.

"We are in the business of slaying giants. We will be preparing well and we know what's coming, we have got a big week ahead of us". "It's as simple as that.".
