IPhone X supplier under fire over student labor

IPhone X supplier under fire over student labor

According to these allegations, Foxconn has been forcing around 3,000 high school students to work overtime to assemble the new iPhone X, often working 11-hour days at one of the company's factories.

The FT report said the students, aged between 17-19, were being forced by their school to participate in the internship.

Apple, in a statement to The Star, said that when it became known that interns were assembling the phones illegally, it took "prompt action".

"We've confirmed the students worked voluntarily, were compensated and provided benefits, but they should not have been allowed to work overtime", an Apple spokesperson told the newspaper.

Foxconn and Apple later took measures to try to make the factory more comfortable and to reduce the amount of overtime from employees, though there have been several reports of worker suicides since.

The U.S. International Trade Commission on Tuesday recommended tariffs to keep Samsung and LG from flooding the U.S. market with affordable washers, a step that would protect American appliance giant Whirlpool. One 18-year-old said, "We are being forced by our school to work here".

2 p.m.: Federal Reserve releases minutes from its October interest-rate meeting.

It added that "interns represent a very small percentage" of its workforce in China and that the breach of labour laws was inconsistent with its own policies.

A spokesperson for Apple told us: "Apple is dedicated to ensuring everyone in our supply chain is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. A team of specialists are on site at the facility working with the management on systems to ensure the appropriate standards are adhered to".

Foxconn worked with local governments and vocational institutions to organize the internship program.

This is far from the first time Foxconn has come under scrutiny for its labor practices.

The BBC reports that Foxconn responded as soon as the facts were revealed.

We required the supplier to provide safe passage home for the underage worker and to continue paying their wages while also providing an educational opportunity.
