Traveling for Thanksgiving? Here are 6 things you need to know

Traveling for Thanksgiving? Here are 6 things you need to know

Almost 51 million Americans are expected to journey more than 50 miles this holiday weekend - a 3-percent increase compared to past year, and the most since 2005.

According to AAA, almost 51 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more during the holiday weekend.

The automotive services company estimates that 50.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from their homes this Thanksgiving, which is a 3.3-percent increase compared to 2016, and 1.6 million more compared to 2005.

The AAA also reported that 89 percent of all travelers, or 45.5 million people, are planning a Thanksgiving road trip, which increased 3.2 percent compared to a year ago.

Air travel - the cheapest since 2013 - is also projected to increase about 3 percent this Thanksgiving. Driving is the most popular mode of travel.

An already busy travel day is expected to be even busier this year, as the number of people heading out of town this year is higher than it's been in years. Arrive 2 hours prior to flight for U.S. travel, 3 hours prior for global travel.

Travelers can expect to spend any "flight savings" on auto rentals.

Travel lane closures for interstate road construction will be prohibited statewide starting Wednesday to help keep traffic moving for the Thanksgiving holiday. Rental cars are also hitting a five-year high because of an increase in demand and the cost of newer vehicles.

The association forecasts 107,802 Georgians to fly for the holiday, the most since 116,695 flew in 2007. The average rate for a AAA Two Diamond Rated hotel has dropped 5 percent to $117. And if there are other passengers, rotate drivers if possible during long trips.

Though gas prices are high this Thanksgiving, the highest since 2014, most people are still planning to hit the roadways this season.

Some more advice for novice travelers - that TSA has recently changed their procedures and that "anything larger than a cell phone needs to be taken out of a carry-on bag and put into a bin", said Nipps.

But, as Lea says, Lambert won't be as busy as other airports like Chicago and NY. Both Orlando, Florida, and Anaheim, California, top this year's top 10 holiday destinations based on bookings. Nearly 90% of Colorado travelers are planning a road trip and expect to pay a pretty penny!
