HPE Falls Sharply On News Whitman Stepping Down

Whitman will remain on the board and Neri will join it, the company said.

Whitman joined Hewlett-Packard in 2011 and oversaw the company's split into two brands.

"I'm incredibly proud of all we've accomplished since I joined HP in 2011", Whitman said in a statement. "Now is the right time for Antonio and a new generation of leaders to take the reins of HPE". More than five years had passed since she'd set out a five-year plan to rescue HP, and she'd accomplished numerous goals she'd outlined, though she'd emphasized there was more work to do to revive HPE's growth. "I have tremendous confidence that they will continue to build a great company that will thrive well into the future".

"During the past six years, Meg has worked tirelessly to bring stability, strength and resiliency back to an iconic company", said Pat Russo, chairman of HPE's board of directors. He has been with the company since 1995. Networking revenue was up 21 percent, and technology services revenue was up two percent. She is also an investor for Uber, and helped it amid its shaky search for a new CEO earlier this year when Travis Kalanick was sacked. He thinks the company is now in a "tremendous position to win".

"Given what she's done, there's not as many exciting things to do", Jayson Noland, a senior research analyst at Baird, told me at the time.

But when I profiled Whitman for Fortune's Most Powerful Women issue in September, there were mounting signs that she was nearing the end of her tenure-not that she would admit it. "Uber's CEO will not be Meg Whitman". He hasn't disclosed any plans he might have as would-be CEO, but that should come shortly.
