Uber Under Fire For Handling Of Data Breach

The Philippine National Privacy Commission (NCP) said on Friday that Uber failed to provide vital information as to whether the data of Filipino Uber users were compromised in a massive breach the company experienced in October previous year, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

Uber has form. In January it was fined $20,000 for failing to disclose a considerably less serious breach in 2014.

The incident will not do Uber any favors as it tries to convince the London mayor to issue a new license to operate in the city, after TfL refused to renew it back in September.

Representative Frank Pallone Jr (N.J.), the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, also called on the FTC to investigate the Uber breach on Wednesday, according to The Hill.

The data breach was not disclosed to regulators at the time of the incident, but Khosrowshahi said the company was now notifying the authorities of the incident, in addition to the customers and drivers whose data was compromised in the attack.

Softbank is seeking a deal which would amount to a 14% stake in the privately-held Uber.

Uber declined to comment on that report.

"You may be asking why we are just talking about this now, a year later".

He said that a year ago, Uber had taken "immediate steps to secure the data and shut down further unauthorized access by the individuals", including "assurances that the downloaded data had been destroyed".

In response to the investigations, an Uber spokesman said in a statement Friday, "We've been in touch with several Attorney General Offices and the (Federal Trade Commission) to discuss this issue, and we stand ready to cooperate with them going forward". Josh Hawley of Missouri, another state attorney general who has opened an investigation into Uber, recently also announced a probe into Google's handling of consumer data and potential anti-competitive behavior as a dominant search engine.

Liboro said that the commission made it clear to Uber that concealment of a data breach that involves sensitive personal information is a criminal offence in the Philippines.

Uber said no financial information or trip records had been stolen in the breach, but Mr Khosrowshahi said its "failure to notify affected individuals or regulators", and ransom payment prompted him to fire chief security officer Joe Sullivan and deputy Craig Clark.

Sense of Security chief technology officer Jason Edelstein said greater attention needed to be paid to "properly" enforcing the regulations when introduced, as having even basic personal information stolen could have dire consequences for consumers.

Uber is offering to individually notify all the drivers and give them free credit monitoring and identify theft protection.

Uber says that the affected accounts belonging to riders are now monitored and have been additionally updated with extra fraud protection but there's now no official way of finding out if your rider's account has been breached.
