Facebook to let users see if they 'liked' Russian accounts

Facebook to let users see if they 'liked' Russian accounts

In November 2016, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said it was a "pretty insane idea" to suggest misinformation spread on the social network influenced the United States presidential election.

This comes as Facebook's most direct effort to address its fake news/accounts problem, or more specifically, how normal users may have been affected by the IRA's make-believe accounts.

The company has now made a decision to build a tool which will allow users to find out if they were following the pages created by the Russia-based Internet Research Agency.

A Facebook spokesperson was not able to tell CBS News if the company has an exact release date planned for the portal.

Facebook is developing a tool that will inform its users in the United States whether they are "liking" or have "liked" pages associated directly or indirectly with foreign agencies.

In January, US intelligence agencies concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a complex influence campaign, which included cyberattacks, leaks, misinformation campaigns and more, to undermine American democracy, harm Hillary Clinton's campaign and help Donald Trump win the election.

The Internet Research Agency, was the mastermind behind over a thousand fake accounts spread out over popular social media interphases such as Instagram, Twitter, and of course, Facebook.

You could soon see whether you interacted with Russian propaganda on Facebook and Instagram during the 2016 election.

Facebook added: "It is important that people understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 U.S. election". The platform is now acknowledging that Russian Federation may have used its platform to influence the United States elections. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal also called on the tech giants to alert consumers if they were exposed to the Russian-purchased content or ads.

USA senator Richard Blumenthal hopes Google and Twitter follows Facebook's lead and create their own tools too.
