'Anti-Terrorism' Muslim Alliance Meets in Saudi, Qatar Excluded

'Anti-Terrorism' Muslim Alliance Meets in Saudi, Qatar Excluded

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman is expected to open the conference, which will be held under the theme "Allied Against Terrorism", in the presence of ministers of defense from the coalition member countries and delegates from diplomatic missions and worldwide organizations in Saudi Arabia.

The summit is the first meeting of defence ministers and other senior officials from the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, which officially counts 41 countries and identifies as a "pan-Islamic unified front" against violent extremism. "With this alliance, this ends today", Prince Salman said. The theme of the Sunday's meeting is "Allied Against Terrorism".

"The pillar of this coalition is inclusion", said Saudi General Abdulelah al-Saleh, the alliance's acting secretary general, playing down the exclusion of the three countries.

In June, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain cut diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism, a claim vehemently denied by the Gulf state.

General (r) Raheel Sharif said while all individual states were making efforts against the menace of terrorism, the required level of the synergy and resources were lacking.

The center provides an open platform for willing IMCTC member countries to exchange best practices and coordinate their counterterrorism efforts, enabling culturally appropriate regional and local solutions to counter terrorism.

Qatar's flag was also absent.

The Saudi Crown Prince offered condolences to Egypt over a deadly mosque attack in the Sinai Peninsula on Friday, in which 305 people were killed and scores injured.

Prince Mohammed said Friday's "painful event" was a reminder of the "danger of terrorism and extremism".

"Those murderers do not represent Islam, they are using those opportunities to cause turmoil in our societies", he said, stressing that "unity" is the only way to combat terrorist groups.

Earlier in November, around 200 Saudi elites including princes, ministers and business tycoons were arrested or sacked.
