Amazon's Sumerian Is A Web-Based Development Service For VR/AR Apps

Amazon's Sumerian Is A Web-Based Development Service For VR/AR Apps

Amazon has announced a browser-based toolkit called Sumerian that the company hopes will make VR and AR development accessible to people without advanced coding or 3D rendering skills.

The software can also handle animation as well, so that developers are able to create 3D characters that can guide users through a scene by narrating scripts or answering questions. Now in preview, Sumerian allows creation of VR and AR scenes that target platforms like the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Google Daydream, and it works with several other Amazon products.

AWS Sumerian is officially available in preview. Supported devices include Google's Daydream, HTC Vive, Facebook's Oculus Rift, and iOS mobile devices.

In the enterprise, AR and VR are poised to make a big impact. That engine is widely used among AR and VR developers, and providing a bridge between Unity and Sumerian could help attract developers. Amazon Sumerian also includes templates with pre-populated scenes. It comes with its own object library that's full of models that developers can use.

Asset Import: Upload 3D assets to use in your scene. That said, it is built on the WebGL JavaScript and WebVR JavaScript APIs, and it offers a JavaScript editor and scripting library.

"Customers across industries see the potential of VR and AR technologies for a wide range of uses-from educating and training employees to creating new customer experiences", said Marco Argenti, VP of technology at Amazon Web Services.

Amazon writes, "Amazon Sumerian solves these challenges by providing a web-based editor that developers can use to easily and quickly create professional-quality scenes, and a visual scripting tool to build the logic that controls how the objects and characters in the scenes behave and respond to actions".

However, customers are afraid of the up-front investment and specialized tools needed to craft useful VR or AR apps.

The public cloud computing giant took the wraps off its new Amazon Sumerian service, which provides a platform for developers to create realistic virtual environments that can be populated with animated characters and other 3D objects.

Sumerian is free to use, but it's built on AWS; that means you need an existing AWS account and you'll be charged for services related to that platform if you use more than is allotted to a free account.
