Epic Games sues 14-year-old cheater, mother rebukes

Epic Games sues 14-year-old cheater, mother rebukes

"As stated previously, we take cheating seriously, and we'll pursue all available options to make sure our games are fun, fair, and competitive for players". Rogers then proceeded to challenge this takedown request, which put Epic into the position of either dropping the claim or file a suit against him, with the latter being the company's choice. In a statement, the company explained that the 14-year-old cheater refused to take down a video Epic says is effectively a how-to guide for using the cheating software. She also points out that Fortnite's EULA requires a player get parental consent if they are a minor. "Epic Games Inc.is in complete violation of this".

The mother of the 14-year old has responded to the lawsuit filed by Epic Games and points out a few important things like how the cheating translated to financial loss for the company given Fortnite Battle Royale is a free-to-play game, and more. Epic makes a teenager "scapegoat", because it is not able to cope with cheaters.

The cases began last month, when Epic began taking action against individual users who had used (and were allegedly associates of) the site Addicted Cheats to obtain "aimbots" that would give them a competitive edge in the game.

To prove that it has indeed suffered financial damage, the teen's mother is urging Epic Games to make a statement that would certify that her son's cheating was directly responsible for a massive loss in profit. The developers are now attempting to sue a 14-year-old boy who, according to the mother, simply downloaded the cheats from a popular cheating site and streamed himself using them. Her argument boils down to the fact that her son did not develop the cheats, nor did he distribute them.

She emphasises that given that the game is free-to-play, there was no question of loss of revenue for the company.

On a grander scale, the lawsuit speaks to the contentious debate around the legal enforcement of licensing agreements and terms of service contracts. They act just like they do in every other game: creating a small plum of smoke to obscure vision. Moreover, these aimbots are set to attack Twitch Streamers, ensuring they can not win the game. Cheating may be something developers have a legitimate interest in stamping out, but doing so by using their formidable resources to crush a 14-year-old would appear to be a step too far. She added that the studio was violating DE laws by releasing her son's name publicly, and she expects the charges are dropped in court.
