U.S. shopping season starts with record high online sales

U.S. shopping season starts with record high online sales

"We view all of these stores as Amazon competitors, so we were curious to see what their foot traffic patterns looked like this year as Amazon continues to dominate". Throughout November, IMRG were tracking 210 retailers as part of this research.

The NRF estimated that 81 million US consumers shopped online on Cyber Monday, well ahead of the 66 million that did so on Black Friday. Nearly a quarter of shoppers spent "much more" over Black Friday weekend.

The holiday season can represent 20 to 40 percent of annual sales for many retailers.

With the long weekend - including Cyber Monday - now in the rearview mirror, retailers are looking to apply lessons to the four weeks remaining in the holiday season. E-commerce continued to be a focus for retail marketers on Black Friday, as 57% of the top 100 offers on RetailMeNot were online-only.

Last week shoppers had a retail therapy frenzy with a slew of luxury and local retailers jumping on board the American Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, heavily discounting their goods to keep up with the growing shopping trend.

The survey showed that shoppers were in the mood to find great deals. But after suffering big drops in store traffic on Black Friday in previous years, this year's decline was slight. "The fundamentals of our economy are strong and consumer sentiment is high". However, at the beginning of the week there were already 77 actively promoting Black Friday campaigns (as well as 37 running their own discount campaigns), with that number increasing sharply on both Wednesday and Thursday. As free shipping deadlines approach, 41% of consumers surveyed reported they feel nervous about online purchases arriving in a timely manner. "This may be attributable to more aggressive deals and comparison checking inside stores". In fact, nearly 9 in 10 (87%) consumers surveyed by RetailMeNot plan to visit a physical store in the month of December, and on average, they plan to do so seven times. But, Shay said, retailers today are like consumers, they don't differentiate between whether something is bought online or in stores.

As for destinations, 43% of consumers shopped department stores, 42% shopped online retailers, 32% shopped electronic stores, 31% shopped clothing and accessories stores, and 31% shopped discount stores.

Millennials, who are often one of the trickiest consumer groups for retailers, were big spenders this past weekend.

Top retail promotion drivers: Search drove the majority of online sales on Cyber Monday at 41.7 percent (paid search at 22.9 percent, organic search at 18.8 percent). RetailMeNot, Inc. The RetailMeNot, Inc. portfolio of websites and mobile applications includes RetailMeNot.com in the United States; RetailMeNot.ca in Canada; VoucherCodes.co.uk in the United Kingdom; ma-reduc.com and Poulpeo.com in France; and GiftCardZen.com and Deals2Buy.com in North America.
