'My heart is at NC State:' Dave Doeren agrees to new contract

'My heart is at NC State:' Dave Doeren agrees to new contract

NC State coach Dave Doeren will remain at the school after discussing the Tennessee job on Wednesday, he confirmed to ESPN. In response to the interest from Tennessee, NC State has offered him a new contract with increases in both compensation and term, as well as an enhanced salary pool for his staff.

North Carolina State Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren (center) leads his team onto the field prior to a game against the Boston College Eagles at Carter Finley Stadium.

Doeren has moved to the top of the school's list after several other candidates turned them down, including Duke football's David Cutcliffe.

Pete Thamel from Yahoo Sports also reported Doeren's decision to stay at N.C. State. State's athletic director Debbie Yow is said to have added $750,000 to the assistant coaches pool.

Doeren had considered an offer from Oregon State and was in preliminary talks with MS before talks with Tennessee reached the point where he was offered the job on Wednesday night.

The negotiations broke down, primarily over the length of the contract, before N.C. State had closed the regular season with a 33-21 win over North Carolina.

Doeren turned down a bigger offer from the SEC school to stay with the Wolfpack after his best season in Raleigh.

Nevertheless, it looks like Tennessee's trying search for a new head coach after firing Butch Jones will continue. Those talks began after the Volunteers backed out of the hiring agreement with Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano before that deal fell through following a public backlash and campus protests on Sunday.

While their bowl game for this season is to be determined, the Wolfpack went 2-1 over their three bowl contests between 2014 and 2016, defeating Central Florida in the St. Petersburg Bowl in 2014 and then topping Vanderbilt in the Independence Bowl last season.
