Rick Pitino Files Breach of Contract Lawsuit Against Louisville over Firing

Rick Pitino is not going to go away quietly.

Former Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino sued the university's Athletic Association for $37.6 million, claiming his contract was breached and that he was sacked with no justified cause.

The ULAA fired the Hall of Fame coach on October 16, weeks after he was placed on leave when Louisville acknowledged it was being investigated in a federal bribery probe of college basketball.

In September, Pitino was "effectively fired" without proper notice, according to the lawsuit.

Due to the alleged breach, Pitino's complaint states that ULAA must pay him the balance of sums due under his contract, as the former coach seeks liquidated contract damages of $4,307,000 per year through June 30, 2026 - amounting to over $38 million.

The lawsuit claims the university breached Pitino's contract by not properly notifying him he was placed on leave and firing him without proper cause.

A federal indictment suggests Pitino knew of the bribe to Bowen, though Pitino is not specifically named in the indictment. He also claims they had no legal justification to fire him for cause.

The lawsuit (via the Louisville Courier-Journal) denies any involvement by the coach in that episode, saying, "Coach Pitino had no part - active, passive or through willful ignorance - in the conspiracy described in the Complaint". The longer Pitino's lawsuit drags on, the longer it will take Louisville to escape the cloud of the bribery scandal the FBI's resulting investigation.
