Major League Baseball approves Japan deal, allowing Ohtani bids — APNewsBreak

MLB owners have approved a new posting agreement with Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan that allows teams to begin bidding for the 23-year-old phenom, the Associated Press reports.

Following the deal with Nippon Professional Baseball, Ohtani was put up for bid by the Pacific League's Nippon Ham Fighters for the maximum $20 million posting fee. The price: a $20 million posting fee to the Nippon-Ham Fighters, Ohtani's former team, and a relatively small bonus that falls within the parameters of the league's global bonus pool.

Shohei Ohtani, who has been called the "Japanese Babe Ruth", is in America and preparing to meet with Major League Baseball teams.

The Rangers now have the most global bonus pool money available ($3.535 million), followed by the Yankees ($3.5 million) and Twins ($3.07 million). Japanese media has reported that Ohtani is now in Los Angeles. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was made.

General manager Rick Hahn quoted a couple of history's greatest philosophers when describing the White Sox's presentation to prized Japanese free agent Shohei Ohtani.

-"And anything else that would help Shohei choose a subset of clubs on which to focus".

Due to the league's posting system rules, Ohtani's initial contract won't be as hefty as most would expect. He hit.332 in 65 games with 16 doubles, eight homers and 31 RBIs.

Some parts of the posting system will be the same as the old one, at least for this year. However, it does not go into effect until November 1, 2018.

For Minor League contracts, the release fee will be a flat 25% of the signing bonus. There will be a supplemental fee of 15 percent of any earned bonuses, salary escalators and exercised options.
