Alshon Jeffery, Eagles Agree to 4-Year Contract Extension

Alshon Jeffery, Eagles Agree to 4-Year Contract Extension

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed wide receiver Alshon Jeffery to a four-year contract extension that runs through 2021.

Originally, Philadelphia chose to take the safe approach with Jeffery by only giving him a one-year deal since there were still some concerns due to his history of injuries.

Originally a 2012 second-rounder with the Bears, Jeffery spent his first five seasons in Chicago, where he earned one Pro Bowl invitation (2013) and became the franchise's third-leading receiver.

The deal announced Saturday is reportedly worth $52 million, with $27 million guaranteed. The six year veteran passed up on a long-term deal with the Minnesota Vikings to play a season in Philadelphia.

The ability to convince top-tier talent to sign low-priced, short-term deals will be even more important once the Eagles have to budget for the cost of an elite franchise quarterback - as they will sometime around 2020.

Players are looking at this Eagles team and the opportunity to play with a budding star such as Wentz and signing on the dotted line when they can. However, he's given the Eagles solid production with 43 catches for 619 yards and 7 touchdowns in 11 games. "Pumped we get to keep ballin together for years to come!" Philadelphia is making the most of having their quarterback carrying such a low cap-hit; they recently gave defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan a contract extension and are slated to do the same with Brandon Graham and Nigel Bradham.

It's the latest in a series of shrewd moves by Eagles Executive Vice President of Football Operations Howie Roseman.
