Top Democrats pull out of White House meeting after Trump tweet

Top Democrats pull out of White House meeting after Trump tweet

"Meeting with "Chuck and Nancy" today about keeping government open and working", the President wrote on Twitter.

"They decided not to show up, they've been all talk and no action", Trump said.

Earlier, Mr Trump had suggested that disagreements with Democrats about immigration, crime and taxes could block a deal. The White House even provided nameplates to make sure it was clear who was refusing to negotiate.

"Only one person in America can sign a bill into law, and that's the president of the United States", Mr. McConnell said.

Schumer and Pelosi were swift to jump on Trump's tweet in their response.

The White House put out a statement on the canceled meeting, calling Schumer and Pelosi's decision "disappointing".

"We have important work to do, and Democratic leaders have continually found new excuses not to meet with the administration to discuss these issues", the two Republicans said.

Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Schumer hope to use the negotiations to help undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children and to provide financing for the Children's Health Insurance Program, whose funding lapsed at the end of September.

President Trump speaks at a meeting on November 27, 2017. In it, Mr. Trump previewed the scheduled meeting with "Chuck and Nancy" but sounded grim about chances for an agreement.

After Trump tweeted he didn't see a possible deal with Democrats, Democratic leaders backed out of a meeting with the president. They want high taxes; we want low taxes.

The president has been mocking Democratic Sen. Christopher A. Coons, Delaware Democrat. "Poor Ryan and McConnell relegated to props".

How this increases the potential for a shutdown: If Democrats weren't yet feeling insulted by the president, they are now. Dems shouldn't hold troop funding hostage for amnesty & illegal immigration.

Congress is rushing against a number of deadlines. I got elected partially because of the border wall.

Congress will need to pass either a stopgap bill or a long-term funding deal by December 8 or the government will run out of money. The last time a government shutdown seemed somewhat likely was back in April, and polls taken at that time showed that voters found nearly no issue was worth shutting down the government. Republicans are seeking extra funding for defence spending.

"I think we're in a very good position in terms of the meeting we just had with Republican senators", Trump said.

"If it happens, it's going to be over illegals pouring into the country, crime pouring into the country, no border wall - which everybody wants", he said.

They said: "Given that the president doesn't see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead". "Hopefully, everyone can cool off a bit and get back to work".

"You worry anytime there is a hiccup this late in the process", he said.
