Metropolitan Opera Responds To James Levine Investigation

Metropolitan Opera Responds To James Levine Investigation

The Metropolitan Opera announced that it is investigating charges of sexual misconduct against its conductor James Levine so that it can take "appropriate action". The sexual relationship continued in NY where Levine served as the acclaimed music director of the Metropolitan Opera from 1976 through 2016.

PeterGelb, General Manager of the Met Opera said that he was aware of the allegations when the victim came forward and lodged a complaint with the IL police in October 2016, the Boston Globe reported.

The alleged victim came forward to the Lake Forest police department in October 2016 to detail the molestation. This followed him first meeting Levine at a summer music event in IL with his parents.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra, where Levine was a conductor from 2004 to 2011, also called the accusations "deeply disturbing" in a statement on Sunday.

Levine, who once led the BSO, has been accused of molesting IL teenager decades ago. "We will now be conducting our own investigation with outside resources".

Now, Gelb said, "we need to determine if these charges are true and, if they are, take appropriate action". Last year, he told police in IL that he'd had sexual contact with Levine when he was under the age of 18.

The unnamed victim said in his statement to police "It nearly destroyed my family and almost led me to suicide". He was trying to seduce me.

He also said that his relationship with Levine extended well into adulthood and that the composer gave him money over the years when he was having financial problems, amounting to more than $50,000. The alleger explains in the report that the misconduct continued as he sought a mentorship from the famed conductor, who had promised to see if he could "be raised special like me".

The 74-year-old has denied the accusations.

"On various occasions he would ask me how I touched myself and then he would touch me the way I touched myself", the man wrote in a statement to police, according to the Times "I was never able to be aroused by this".

The Met tweeted on December 3, Sunday, "We are deeply disturbed by the news articles that are being published online today about James Levine".
