Arctic Air to Bring 60mph Winds and Snow Later in the Week

Arctic Air to Bring 60mph Winds and Snow Later in the Week

This does two things: 1) It allows cold air to flow into the region from the north. 2) It places our region in a zone of rising air where narrow bands of accumulating snow can develop.

Mostly cloudy Thursday night, with lows near 20 degrees (-6 to -7 degrees Celsius). A disturbance will swing across the area Friday into Saturday with a chance of light precipitation. Rain chances this afternoon will remain low at 30%, but you may want to carry the umbrella for the chance of a couple of showers. "There will be wintry showers consisting of hail and snow, but it looks like Dublin won't be hit too hard compared to the north-west".

"But on Wednesday night there's going to be heavy rain countrywide and, when it clears, there will be a notable change in temperatures".

The overnight low is expected to be near 29.

Friday will continue with very cold temperatures.

Rain chances will increase through most of the week

Clouds thicken tonight, and a few showers are possible after midnight over north Alabama ahead of the Arctic front.

Met Office meteorologist Charles Powell warned temperatures could drop even lower than last week as northerly gales blast the UK. High temperatures Wednesday may be early in the day, in the mid 40s, as it's very well possible the temperatures will be falling as we progress through the afternoon. That slackens off a bit to about 60 percent chance of rain Tuesday night, when temperatures dive down to 40 to 47 degrees.

If nothing else, much-needed rainfall is expected Tuesday night and early Wednesday with the passage of the cold front. Friday will be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 40s.

For a week, we've been talking about the colder-than-normal weather set to arrive by Thursday.
