Irish PM 'surprised and disappointed' by no deal on Irish border

Irish PM 'surprised and disappointed' by no deal on Irish border

A leaked text from a document supposedly agreed between the United Kingdom and Irish Government appeared to show a deal had been struck as leaders scrambled to arrange celebratory press conferences to mark the occasion.

The concession has yet to be accepted by the Irish government.

"We will not accept any form of regulatory divergence which separates Northern Ireland economically or politically from the rest of the U.K.", DUP leader Arlene Foster said.

"It was not possible to reach complete agreement today", he said.

Mrs May hopes to achieve a breakthrough during her visit to Brussels to meet Mr Juncker and European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier on Monday.

The UK government has repeatedly insisted many of these questions can not be answered until the next stage of Brexit talks - on a transition period and a future EU-UK trading and customs relationship - is allowed to begin.

There has been "some progress" towards a Brexit agreement on the Irish border but it remains "50/50" whether a deal will be reached, Sky News understands.

Brussels officials and diplomats sounded increasingly confident of a deal over the weekend, but they caution that much will depend on the outcome of May's talks over lunch.

The Irish prime minister said he is "surprised and disappointed" that there was no agreement in Brexit talks today.

She said: "There are a couple of issues, some differences do remain which require further negotiation and consultation".

Guy Verhofstadt added that a financial settlement on the divorce was as good as done - "it seems, yes" - while the talks on citizens' rights and Ireland's border still had outstanding issues to solve.

Weber said in a tweet that even if the issue of the outstanding bill had made major progress, "we are much more concerned about the fact that negotiations are stalled on the protection of European Union citizens' rights & on the Irish case".

If she had ignored their concerns, there's little doubt that the party's 10 MPs would have sat on their hands and not supported the Conservatives in important votes on the EU Withdrawal Bill this week.

"We now have a common understanding on most related issues with just two or three open for discussion".

May depends in parliament on a pro-British party in Northern Ireland that rejects any deal which would divide the province from the British mainland. "Getting closer to sufficient progress at December #EUCO".

Varadkar said he would speak in public shortly.
