Malta arrests 10 over Caruana Galizia auto bomb murder

Malta arrests 10 over Caruana Galizia auto bomb murder

Police have 48 hours to questions those arrested.

Explaining the reason for staying tight-lipped, Muscat cited concerns that divulging information could compromise the prosecutions.

Blogger Caruana Galizia, who was 53 when she was killed in a vehicle bomb attack on October 16, had made repeated and detailed corruption allegations against both Muscat's inner circle and the opposition.

The arrests were the first apparent break in the murder investigation, which is receiving support from the FBI, Europol, and Finnish security services.

Galizia, 53, was murdered on October 16.

Malta has a population of 400,000 and is the European Union's smallest state.

Muscat said that the eight suspects are all Maltese citizens and were arrested on Monday morning (4 December).

Television reported that Caruana Galizia had filed a complaint to the police two weeks ago to say she had received threats.

A court hearing is set for Tuesday.

Europol, the European Union's police agency, has sent a team of organized crime experts to help Maltese police investigate the assassination, joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Dutch forensic experts.

Malta has a reputation as a tax haven in the European Union and has attracted companies and money from outside Europe as well.

Just last week, a visiting delegation of European Parliament lawmakers left the island expressing concerns over the rule of law in the tiny EU member country and issued a warning that the "perception of impunity in Malta can not continue". Authorities, including anti-Mafia investigators in nearby Italy, worry that Malta is in the eye of criminals on the lookout for money-laundering schemes.

Following the death, the Maltese government offered a €1m (£890,000) reward for information about Caruana Galizia's murder.

"Caruana Galizia, a longtime columnist for the Malta Independentand prolific blogger, had spent more than a year perusing the documents included in the Panama Papers, a massive data leak that exposed the offshore bank accounts of politicians around the world".

'Everyone knows Caruana Galizia was a harsh critic of mine, both politically and personally, but nobody can justify this barbaric act in any way, ' Muscat said.
