Trump Working Overtime to Block Romney from the Senate

The former MA governor was reportedly seriously considering running for Senate in his new home state of Utah, under the condition that the state's longtime senator, Orrin Hatch, decided not to run for re-election in 2018.

The 83-year-old Hatch, whom Trump Utah campaign leader Don Peay called "one of the leading voices for the president during the entire campaign", and "clearly. a strong supporter of Trump from the beginning", began telling friends in October that he would retire at the end of his term.

When asked if he was sending a message to Romney, who was an outspoken critic of Trump during the 2016 campaign, that he doesn't want him to run, Trump paused and said, "He's a good man. Mitt's a good man".

A weekly recap of the top political stories from The Globe, sent right to your email. After Trump retweeted Islamophobic videos last week, Hatch said he wasn't "aware" of the controversy, then offered some general praise: "I'll say this for ya.' He's been one of the best presidents I've served under, and the reason is he's not afraid to make decisions".

"I asked for the president's help in fixing this disaster", Hatch said. As Senate Finance Committee chairman Hatch helped push Trump's tax cuts through the Senate last week. In poll conducted two months ago, 75 percent of Utahns said Hatch should not run again, and Hatch came in third in a theoretical 2018 Senate race.

In March, Hatch told CNN that Trump was urging him to run again.

"Over the past year the President has encouraged Senator Hatch to consider running for re-election a number of times, because of his leadership position and ability to advance their shared Republican agenda", Hatch spokesman Matt Whitlock said in a statement to ABC News.

In discussions with almost a dozen friends, donors and former advisers, Romney has expressed strong interest in the post if Hatch were to retire.

Trump and Hatch have developed something of a rapport in Trump's first year.

It's widely rumored that 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney will run for the seat if Hatch decides to retire. The victor by far: Mitt Romney.

I mean, surely someone as well versed on both moral rectitude and rank opportunism as Mitt Romney can comprehend a political maneuver by someone whose butt he's alternately kicked and kissed. "He's playing the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat". However, he's also criticized Trump enough to get under his skin; Romney called on Trump to stay in the Paris climate agreement, blasted his response to the violence in Charlottesville, and undermined Trump's response to the Roy Moore scandal. According to the Washington Examiner, former White House strategist Steve Bannon is considering endorsing Hatch to keep Romney out of the Senate.
