Conyers announces retirement amid sexual harassment allegations: 'My legacy can't be compromised'

Conyers announces retirement amid sexual harassment allegations: 'My legacy can't be compromised'

This morning Congressman John Conyers (D-MI), the longest-serving member of the House, told The Mildred Gaddis Show that he's "retiring today".

John Conyers returned to Detroit from Washington last week and was hospitalized on Wednesday after complaining that he felt light-headed.

Arnold Reed, attorney for Rep. John Conyers, holds up an image of Conyers and Marion Brown, one of the two women accusing the congressman of inappropriate behavior, as he addresses the media in Detroit on December 1.

It would also lead Gov. Rick Snyder to set in motion a process for a special election to fill Conyers' seat - though that, too, could take months during which the seat would sit empty.

'The allegations against congressman Conyers as we have learned more since Sunday are serious, disappointing and very credible, ' said Pelosi, a California representative who notably did not call for Conyers to go during a Sunday appearance on NBC's 'Meet the Press'.

Ian Conyers, the grandson of Conyers's brother, plans to run for his seat, setting up an intra-family contest.

Conyers, who was first elected in 1964 and went on to become a founding member in 1971 of the Congressional Black Caucus, easily won re-election past year to his 27th term in the heavily Democratic district in and around Detroit. "It will be Congressman John Conyers who decides what it is he is going to do". The RealClearPolitics average has him up by 1.5 points in the polls, and many-but not all-signs point to his winning the seat.

Grubbs came forward as Conyers is expected to speak on a Detroit radio show Tuesday about his future.

Conyers has continued to deny the women's accounts, and his lawyer said Conyers would not pay back the settlement money that was paid to Brown at taxpayer expense. He is the longest-serving member in the House. "I think we have to recognize and be able to hold the dueling possibilities that somebody can be a great man and have done great things for our country and for civil rights but also have done awful things that require accountability". He also was accused of harassment by ethics lawyer Melanie Sloan and sexual harassment by former staff member Deanna Maher.

"Seattle's Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who served with Conyers on the House Judiciary Committee, demanded his resignation a week ago, saying there should be "'zero tolerance' for sexual harassment".

"Witnessing Rep. Conyers rub women's thighs and buttocks and make comments about women's physical attributes was a regular part of life while working in the Office of Rep. Conyers", Grubbs said in the affidavit. Al Franken, D-Minnesota.

"I was taught by a great woman, my mother, to honor women", Conyers wrote, according to the congresswoman.

When asked if Congress should disclose the details of settlements made by other lawmakers in cases of sexual misconduct or harassment, Conyers replied with "a strong, unequivocal yes". "They are not true and I think they are something that I can't explain where they came from".
