Senior UN official to visit North Korea this week

Senior UN official to visit North Korea this week

Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman is scheduled to meet Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, Vice Minister Pak Myong Guk, diplomats and United Nations staff during his stay.

The visit came as tensions further escalate on the Korean Peninsula following the latest ballistic missile launch by DPRK and an on-going U.S.

Asked about Feltman's visit, a spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations said that "while our focus remains on finding a peaceful diplomatic solution, the reality is that the regime has shown no interest in credible negotiations".

Feltman will also meet with the heads of various U.N. humanitarian programs operating in North Korea, including UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the U.N. Population Fund. Previously he served as US assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs. Reuters 1246 "The visit is a response to a long-standing invitation from the authorities in Pyongyang for policy dialogue with the U.N. We were able to confirm the visit last Thursday, November 30th". A delegation headed by State Department Special Representative Joseph Yun flew to Pyongyang to oversee the release of American college student Otto Warmbier in June this year.

The U.S. and South Korea started joint military drills Monday.

The spokesman was unable to say whether Feltman will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

Mr. Feltman's visit to North Korea has added significance because he is expected to travel to China as well as Japan, which covers the three most important countries in the region that play a crucial role in this geopolitical crisis.

US President Donald Trump has engaged in months of tit-for-tat rhetoric with Kim, pejoratively dubbing him "Little Rocket Man" and a "sick puppy".
