Singapore Airlines Reroutes Flights Around North Korean Missile Paths

Singapore Airlines Reroutes Flights Around North Korean Missile Paths

After the North launched dozens of rockets and ballistic missiles that year, South Korea complained to the United Nations Security Council and global aviation and maritime organizations about the lack of warning. The missile flew about 1,000 km before landing in Japan's maritime Economic Exclusion Zone, reports claim.

JADGE is considered the brain of Japan's missile defense system.

The move came after the July 27 missile launch by North Korea into the Sea of Japan, Singapore Airlines said on Tuesday (Dec 5) in response to queries from Channel NewsAsia.

Japan's defense ministry is requesting ten-point-seven billion yen which is over 94 million US dollars in its 2018 budget to make the changes with hopes to fully deploy the upgraded version by 2022.

"Today the crew of CX893 reported, 'Be advised, we witnessed the DPRK missile blow up and fall apart near our current location", the airline's operations manager Mark Hoey wrote in a message on a company communication platform, the Post reported.

Cathay Pacific said the ICBM test didn't come close to the aircraft and it now has no plans to alter operations.

North Korea's missile testing, which is often conducted without prior notice as required under global agreements, has caused some concern for commercial airlines.

The chance of an unaimed missile striking a plane are "billions to one", according to CNN aviation safety analyst David Soucie.

"Though the flight was far from the event location, the crew advised Japan [air traffic control] according to procedures". Two South Korean planes also reported witnessing the missile test.

Since the North Korea regime does not announce its missiles tests and does not have access to worldwide civil aviation data, the launches come without warning for commercial airliners and pose a potential risk to planes, the BBC News noted.

"At the moment, no one is changing any routes or operating parameters", the airline said in a statement via the AP.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in October condemned North Korea for the repeated launching of ballistic missiles, saying they seriously threatened the safety of international civil aviation.

The Singapore Airlines has rerouted few of its flights to avoid the North Korean missiles, as a precautionary measure.

Last month, the F.A.A. restricted American carriers from that slice of North Korean airspace as well, citing the "hazardous situation created by North Korean military capabilities and activities, including unannounced North Korean missile launches and air defense weapons systems".
