The national team of Russian Federation was suspended from the Olympic games

The national team of Russian Federation was suspended from the Olympic games

Second part of McLaren Report published, alleging state-sponsored doping by the Russians between 2011 and 2015 with sample tampering at the 2012 London Olympics and Sochi 2014.

Russian athletes who can prove their innocence of drug cheating will be permitted to compete under the designation of an "Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR)", the IOC announced in a news release.

Speaking at a press conference after the decision was announced, Schmid said that his commission had not found any evidence that the Kremlin was aware of the doping cover-up, but the International Olympic Committee banned Russia's former sports minister and current head of Russia's national soccer association, Vitaly Mutko, for life from the Olympics, along with his former deputy, Yuri Nagornykh. Mutko was the sports minister in 2014 and is the head of the organizing committee of soccer's next World Cup.

Those probes have concluded that more than 1,000 Russian athletes across at least 30 sports, including both summer and winter events, had been involved in doping that dated from at least 2011.

Nevertheless, the president of Russia's Bobsleigh Federation, Alexander Zubkov, told Russian television: "This is humiliation". The bans came as a result of an International Olympic Committee investigation into allegations of widespread doping among Russians and sample tampering by laboratory and security officials at the Sochi Olympics.

International Olympic Committee comes down hard on Russian cheats, stripping Alexander Legkov of his Sochi 50-kilometre cross country gold medal and banning him for life.

That was the punishment issued Tuesday to the proud sports juggernaut that has long used the Olympics as a show of global force but was exposed for systematic doping in previously unfathomable ways. Although virtually Russia's entire track and field team was barred from the Rio Games, in the end, the country was able to field around 70 percent of its Olympic team. But Russia's success at those Olympics, according to former Moscow antidoping lab director Grigory Rodchenkov, came with some assistance behind the scenes.

In a press release the IOC added that the Russian Olympic Committee must "reimburse the costs incurred by the IOC on the investigations and to contribute to the establishment of the Independent Testing Authority (ITA) for the total sum of Dollars 15 million, to build the capacity and integrity of the global anti-doping system".

Two IOC commission leaders - appointed after WADA investigator Richard McLaren upheld Rodchenkov's doping claims in July 2016 - also reported to the Olympic board. So far the figure stands at 25 athletes, with 11 medals stripped.
