YouTube To Deploy Reviewers To Filter Extremist, Disturbing Videos

YouTube To Deploy Reviewers To Filter Extremist, Disturbing Videos

The company said its new efforts to protect children from unsafe and abusive content and block hate speech on the site were modeled after the company's ongoing work to fight violent extremist content.

This latest announcement by the company comes in the wake of criticism by British Prime Minister Theresa May, who has always been scolding the social media companies to regulate the content responsibly, following a series of terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom.

Several advertisers, included Mars Inc., Adidas and Diageo, said they would pull their campaigns off YouTube in the aftermath, fearing the videos would attract pedophiles, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Recently, British media reported that big brand advertisements were tied to the videos of children and teens, which drew inappropriate public comments. That's 10,000 people who will be watching very bad YouTube content, day in, day out, like the millions of children around the world their paymaster profits from.

"Our advances in machine learning let us now take down almost 70 percent of violent extremist content within eight hours of upload and almost half of it in two hours and we continue to accelerate that speed", Wojcicki said.

Google will increase the number of its teams identifying and removing extremist content, hate speech and child cruelty from its YouTube channels following allegations of profiteering amid the failure to remove unsuitable footage.

"We will be talking to creators over the next few weeks to hone this new approach", YouTube CEO said.

That's why it aims to appoint as many as 10,000 people across Google to review content that might violate its policies.

"This will also help vetted creators see more stability around their revenue". Now, YouTube chief Susan Wojcicki has explained how the platform plans to keep a closer eye on the videos it hosts going forward by applying the lessons it learned fighting violent extremism content. Wojcicki says the company has begun training its algorithms to improve child safety on the platform and to be better at detecting hate speech.

As for speed of removal, incoming technology will allow YouTube to take down almost 70% of violent extremist content within eight hours of upload and almost half of it in two hours.
