28 years after Montreal, women still face violence

On the anniversary of the École Polytechnique massacre, local social agencies across the province are honouring women who are victims of violence and joining supporters across the country in a national day of remembrance.

It was also a call to action to help put an end to violence against women. He shot and killed 14 women, while injuring 14 others.

"As we mark this anniversary, we also mourn all the women and girls whose lives have been lost to gender-based violence, and we recognize that many women face violence in their daily lives". It is the deadliest mass shooting in Canadian history.

"It brought a very acute spotlight onto violence against women that it just doesn't happen in our homes or in far away places".

Bouquets of red, pink and white roses were laid outside Ecole polytechnique on Wednesday at the foot of a plaque bearing the names of the 14 women who were killed there 28 years ago.

"They were promising engineering students, murdered for one reason: they were women", Status of Women Minister Stephanie McLean said in a statement. And yet, there is hope, hope for a future where people are respected, where violence is not accepted, where women and girls are secure, with the choice and opportunities to pursue their dreams.

"That's one of the key goals that we have when talking about ending domestic violence because there is a stigma around that as well".

The data compiled from this survey provided tools for unions and women's organizations to pressure the federal and provincial governments to take concrete action on the issues.

Unions have been negotiating language in collective agreements to provide dedicated paid leave for members experiencing violence, as well as protection from adverse action or discrimination as a result of disclosing. Society's view of women has normalized the behaviours and attitudes that promote gender-based violence.

Among those younger Canadians with bachelor's degrees or higher, five times as many men as women opt to follow a path toward science, technology, engineering or math, according to Statistics Canada's latest release.
