IPL franchises allowed to retain up to five players

IPL franchises allowed to retain up to five players

The Indian Premier League Governing Council met in New Delhi on Wednesday alongwith the Committee of Administrators (CoA) to decide the player retention policy, salary cap, player regulations and other related issues, especially for the uncapped players, with ten seasons up for the cash-rich league.

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, the two franchises returning from a two-year suspension, will be able to retain players from among those who were in their squads in 2015, and from the list of their players who represented Rising Pune Super Giant and Gujarat Lions in 2017.

However, Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions will not feature in the 11th edition of the tournament. The IPL Governing Council also hiked the salary budget of the franchises from Rs 66 crore to Rs 80 crore for the next year's auction, tentatively set for February.

Also, every team can retain up to five players by virtue of a combination of Player Retention (Pre Player Auction) and Right to Match (RTM) (applicable during the Player Auction).

The IPL Governing Council had allowed a maximum of either three retentions or three Right To Match (RTM) at the discretion of the franchises.

- Maximum of two Overseas players. Each franchise team will have a maximum of 25 players (up to eight foreign) and a minimum of 18 players.

- Maximum of three Capped Indian players. But if there is no retention before the player auction then the franchises can have up to three RTM.

"What has been decided in the meeting was that the franchises can retain three players and two Right to Match or two retentions and three Right to Match", said one of the members who attended the meeting.

Top players such as Virat Kohli, who turned up for Royal Challengers Bangalore till this season, will most likely come in the Rs 15 crore bracket as they will be the most sought after by their old teams. Out of five, three can be retained & two can be taken under Right to Match or vice-versa. "The minimum spend will be 75 per cent of the salary cap for each season", the BCCI stated.

For uncapped players' retention, the franchises will have to dish out INR 3 Crores per player from their pre-auction purse.
