Obama to Speak as World Mayors Sign Chicago Climate Charter

Obama to Speak as World Mayors Sign Chicago Climate Charter

Under Obama the USA economy grew at an average of 2.1 percent, although some quarters saw three percent growth.

Dozens of mayors from around the world have signed a "Chicago Climate Charter" at a summit created to address concerns following President Donald Trump's rejection of the Paris climate accord.

Mayors from across the country say a lack of leadership in Washington on climate change is prompting them to take action themselves. They also agreed to meet goals similar to those in the Paris climate accord, which President Trump announced earlier this year the US would withdraw from.

Obama didn't mention Trump by name, saying only that the US was in an "unusual" position as the sole country to reject the Paris agreement.

Valérie Plante, together with mayors from across North America, is setting climate change goals in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement.

Former President Barack Obama on Tuesday told a summit of mayors driven to act after President Donald Trump rejected the Paris climate accord that cities and states are the "new face of American leadership" on climate change.

Chicago is committing to electric cars and renewable energy as cities step up to fulfill an global climate change deal the US has spurned.

In Chicago, Emanuel says the city is already about 40% toward meeting its 2025 goals. Nevertheless, in May 2017, Iran unveiled the National Strategic Plan on Climate Change, which outlines the role of every government sector in reducing Iran's carbon emissions and measures to mitigate the impacts of a warming planet on various sectors, including health and agriculture.

Speaking in Chicago to mayors at a climate summit, the former president noted the "conveyor belt" of hurricanes this year and western cities dealing with "longer and harsher" wildfire seasons. The city got a head start by closing its last two coal plants in 2012, and has retrofitted more than 54 million square feet of office building more energy efficient. It also calls for them to work with scientific and academic experts to find solutions.

Mexico City Mayor Angel Mancera says in a statement that his sprawling capital of about 9 million is committed to combating climate change through programs such as ensuring all residents have access to alternative transportation like walking and cycling, as a matter of land use policy.

"This is only an opportunity if there is a true commitment on the part of cities", said Naomi Davis, an environmental activist with the group Blacks in Green. "There were skeptics who said these actions would kill jobs and depress growth". "We have to ask, 'Is there a true commitment and what's the evidence of it?' So far we haven't seen it".
