Plot to Assassinate UK Prime Minister Theresa May Is Foiled, Sky Reports

THE two men whose plan to kill the United Kingdom prime minister was thwarted last week by law enforcers have been charged with terrorism and will appear in court today, say news reports.

Earlier on Tuesday, May's spokesman said Britain had thwarted nine plots in the last 12 months.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said: "It's the latest in a number of terror plots that police and MI5 believe they've foiled this year".

Naa'imur Zakariyah Rahman, left, and Mohammed Aquib Imran are seen in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London, Dec. 6, 2017. When asked about his nationality in court, Imran said he was Bangladeshi British.

The security services believe they have stopped an Islamist suicide bomb plot to assassinate the Prime Minister. Carroll said Imran was accused of trying to join the Islamic State militant group in Libya.

Both men, who indicated that they would plead not guilty, were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on December 20.

A weeks-long investigation into the case culminated last week with the arrests of two men on charges of preparing acts of terrorism, according to the report.

It comes as a new report found that security services could possibly have prevented a suicide attack at the Manchester Arena in May.

10 Downing Street is the location of the prime minister's office.

Both men were arrested by officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command in raids in London and Birmingham on Tuesday November 28. The then prime minister, John Major, was inside but was not hurt.

Terror attacks at Westminster, London Bridge, Finsbury Park, and in Manchester this year killed more than 30 people and injured hundreds more.
