Senate Approves Trump's Homeland Security Pick

Senate Approves Trump's Homeland Security Pick

Kirstjen Nielsen was sworn in Wednesday as secretary of the Department Homeland Security after she received Senate confirmation the day prior by a vote of 62-37.

Kirstjen Nielsen is now an aide to White House chief of staff John Kelly, who served as Trump's first homeland secretary. She was a deputy to former head John Kelly, who became head of the White House office in July.

"There will be no on-the-job training for Kirstjen", Trump said when he announced her nomination in October, praising her "sterling reputation". Some in Congress still have their doubt about the politics behind the move and whether she has what it takes to lead DHS. "She still must show us she has the ability lead a workforce of 240,000 while keeping the country safe and secure".

Nielsen will be the first cyber professional to head the agency charged with protecting federal civilian networks, leading efforts to coordinate cybersecurity of privately owned critical infrastructure. Although some Democrats have criticized Nielsen's lack of executive experience, 11 senators on the minority side supported her.

The Post summarized Nielsen's career by noting that she worked at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and then as a White House adviser for emergency preparedness and disaster management under President George W. Bush.

"I can't unequivocally state it's caused by humans", she said.

The Times noted that a bipartisan group of former homeland security officials, including two former secretaries of the department, Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff, both Republicans who served under Mr.

"It has been an honor to serve as the Department's Acting Secretary, and I look forward to working alongside Ms. Nielsen as her deputy as we continue to carry out the DHS mission of safeguarding the American people, our homeland, and our values", she said in a statement.

Her position will also drop her into the middle of multiple immigration fights, as senators debate how to address the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Her confirmation Tuesday gives the White House a DHS chief well-versed in the politics and the policy goals of Trump's immigration enforcement agenda.
