Sunni Waqf Board dismisses Sibal's plea in Ayodhya case

Sunni Waqf Board dismisses Sibal's plea in Ayodhya case

The Sunni Waqf Board on Wednesday distanced itself from its counsel Kapil Sibal's submission to the Supreme Court that the hearing of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case is held after 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress was quick to hit back.

Addressing the media in Ahmedabad, Shah said Rahul was visiting temples in Gujarat, while on the other hand Congress leader Kapil Sibbal wanted to delay the Ram Janmbhoomi case.

Reacting to the development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Sunni Waqf Board, saying, "Everyone wants a time-bound solution, except the Congress and its leaders".

Watch accompanying video for more details. "And that the court will decide", Sibal added. Indeed, even in this instance, Sibal, Rajeev Dhavan, and Dushyant Dave were appearing for the litigants, and the Waqf Board could be backing off now because it doesn't want to be embroiled in a controversy, said a lawyer appearing for one of the litigants on condition of anonymity. "You want to keep the issue unresolved for political gain and losses in the elections?"

Following this, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Amit Shah, in a press briefing, took a potshot at the Congress Party and its vice president, Rahul Gandhi, for adopting "double standard" in the matter.

The stakeholders in the case had moved the apex court after the Allahabad HC directed the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and the Lord Ram Lalla to settle for a three-way division of the disputed site. "Congress should clear its stand on this", he said. Modi asked from the crowd.

The Supreme Court has set the final hearing on the case for February 8, 2018.

Speaking on the issue of "triple talaq", Modi said "When the matter was in the Supreme Court, the Government had to put their affidavit".

"Why does he have to link a Ram mandir (temple) with the elections".

A law banning the controversial practice of instantaneous divorce that would provide for jail sentence to those "ruining the lives of our mothers and sisters" will be passed by Parliament, Modi said, apparently seeking to reach out to Muslim women.

"For the last three days, they were saying "ave che, ave che, ave che", (it is coming, it is coming, it is coming). They have also gone from Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh", Modi said, taking a swipe at the opposition party over their humiliating electoral defeat in the northern state.
