Apple announces best iPad app and game of the year

Apple announces best iPad app and game of the year

Roughly a week after Google revealed the Android Play Store's top apps of the year, Apple has done the same, showcasing which of this year's most popular apps, music, movies, podcasts, and books have topped iOS users' lists in 2017. First of all, the introduction of AR (augmented reality) apps and games picked up pace this year, second they point out is the rise of real-time competitive gaming, third is the growing popularity of lifestyle apps (like Zomato or Big Basket), and finally increase in popularity of apps enabling photo and video editing.

Apple's iPad game of the year is The Witness, a attractive single-person puzzle game. Also mentioned is that the most downloaded apps of 2017 are Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Messenger, Instagram and Facebook. If you've been keeping up with the App Store regularly throughout 2017, numerous top apps and games should look familiar to you, but there are some surprises as well. Apple says its app of the year for iPhone is Calm, a meditation and sleep app, and Splitter Critters is 2017's iPhone game of the year. The Witness was also selected as Game of the Year on the Mac App Store, where Aurora HDR 2018 won in the app category.

Talking about apps, the App Store editors have identified four breakout trends in app culture for 2017. Ed Sheeran's Shape of You, meanwhile, ranked as this year's top song.

Taylor Swift's album "reputation" has already shot up to number three on the 2017 USA top album charts, despite having only been available for a short period of time. Disney's Moana was the most-watched movie, with "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "Wonder Woman" coming in as runners-up. Game of Thrones unsurprisingly dominated in the TV realm, with NPR's Fresh Air topping podcast charts.

But you're unlikely to guess the names of the 2017 iPhone and iPad App of the Year award recipients without cheating.

If you want to see the full lists, just load up iTunes or the App Store and you'll see it all on the front page.
