Google removes all apps from Chrome Store

Google removes all apps from Chrome Store

Google Chrome apps are in their last phase of existence, Google is now trying to retain one of the most useful by opening a separate portal.

Google had announced back in August 2016 that it would end Chrome apps across Windows, Mac and Linux platforms citing the reason that less than 1 percent of users were using them.

The Google Chrome extensions, however, won't be affected and will stay accessible for all for now.

First spotted by Chrome Story, Google has opened (potentially earlier than intended) a new web portal for Chrome Remote Desktop.

Progressive Web Apps are not Chrome-specific. Hosted apps function mostly like webpage bookmarks which could be conveniently pinned across parts of the user interface. "We will be removing support for packaged and hosted apps from Chrome on Windows, Mac, and Linux over the next two years". People who use Chrome just for web surfing will be able to download extensions and themes.

Google's replacement for Chrome apps will come in the form of what it refers to as PWAs or progressive web apps. The apps that have already been installed still work. PWAs use the modern web capabilities to deliver an app-like experience to the web or desktop users. PWAs aren't exactly a "standard" but are a catch-all phrase for a combination of existing W3C standards like a Web app manifest for app icons and service workers for push notifications and background updates.

This concept is already working on Android - via the Samsung browser, Firefox and Opera. PWAs got a big boost to move beyond Android when Microsoft announced it was bringing PWAs to Windows 10, and even Apple has slowly started work on adding PWA support to Safari.

Now Google has sent an email to developers saying that the depreciation of Chrome Apps in favour of PWA is being delayed.

Chrome Remote Desktop allows users to remotely access another computer through Chrome browser or a Chromebook.
