GOP leaves little doubt they'll prevent government shutdown

Congressional Republican leaders as well as U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are scheduled to meet with Trump on Thursday.

Trump says of Democrats: "They want to have illegal immigrants pouring into our country".

In another brewing battle, Meadows said conservatives would strongly oppose any spending bill with provisions extending protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who arrived in the USA illegally as children.

"His party controls the Senate, the House and the presidency", he said.

Current federal spending is set to run out this weekend, and lawmakers are discussing an extension that would keep government agencies open until at least December 22.

"No one wants a shutdown, including Freedom Caucus members", Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., told reporters.

He also said Ryan promised he'd fight in coming weeks to pass a full-year budget for the military and leave fights with Democrats over domestic spending for later.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., meanwhile, made a trip across the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, meeting in McCarthy's office with several House members.

"I'd really like to know what you expect to accomplish in the next two weeks when we haven't been able to accomplish anything in the last two months", said Representative Nita M. Lowey of NY, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee.

"President Trump is the only person talking about a government shutdown", she wrote.

The drama comes as House and Senate negotiators are seeking to finalize a Republican tax overhaul that would represent a crowning legislative achievement for the GOP in a year otherwise devoid of them.

Asked if a shutdown would be a distraction, he said, "Of course".

This time, the White House followed up with a more accommodating statement that praised Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The White House said Trump would sign the stopgap spending measure.

Without support from many of them, Republicans would need votes from Democrats to push the temporary spending measure through the House, and Democrats have not said what they will do.

For Republicans, a shutdown would put a humiliating bookend on a year in which they've controlled the White House and Congress with little to show for it.

The short-term spending bill does provide some short-term help for states that are running out of money to finance the children's health insurance program for lower-income children, but it stops short of renewing the program, which Congress allowed to expire at the end of September. CHIP, which has nearly always been a bipartisan priority, expired over two months ago, but Congressional Republicans continued to play games with this vital program that helps the most vulnerable children in our society ...

Democrats have been using their leverage to insist on spending boosts for health care, infrastructure and other domestic programs that would match increases Republicans want for defense. Democrats are also expected to bring up a potential deal on immigration that would include protections for at least 790,000 "dreamers", immigrants brought illegally to the United States as children. Trump ended safeguards against deportation three months ago, but Democrats are demanding their revival and Trump has expressed openness to restoring them.
