GOP tax plan is deeply unpopular, according to new Quinnipiac poll

Twenty-nine percent of Americans approve and 53 percent disapprove of the Republican plan to overhaul the USA tax code, a Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday indicated.

Two new polls released Tuesday on the Republican overhaul of the federal tax code showed similar majority levels of disapproval.

In a separate question, American voters say 61-to-34 percent that the tax plan favors the rich at the expense of the middle class.

Republicans overwhelmingly approve of the plan by 67 to 10 percent, the only party, gender, education, age or racial group listed to approve. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.

The findings came as congressional lawmakers were set to begin reconciling the differences included in the respective GOP tax overhaul bills that have passed the U.S. House and Senate in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, American voters give President Donald Trump a negative 35-to-58 percent job approval rating, which has slipped three points compared to the 38-to-55 percent approval rating Trump got in a November 21 Quinnipiac University poll.

Though billed as a tax cut for all, or most, 41 percent said they think the plan will increase their taxes, 32 percent think it will be neutral and 20 percent said they expect tax cut. Only 25 percent said Trump shouldn't be investigated. "It's a fantastic bill for the middle class", Mr. Trump said.

From Nov. 29-Dec. 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,508 voters nationwide using landline and cellphone interviews.

The legislation further calls for roughly doubling the standard deduction to $24,000 for joint filers and surviving spouses and $12,000 for individual filers, and eliminating so-called "special interest" deductions, among other things.

Despite the distaste for the bill among the public, Republicans passed legislation through the House and Senate. The Senate approved its plan - which includes a measure to repeal the Affordable Care Act mandate - by a vote of 51-49 early Saturday.
