IIHS Top Safety Rating: Only 15 Cars Make Cut for 2018

IIHS Top Safety Rating: Only 15 Cars Make Cut for 2018

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is out with its top safety picks for 2018 and the head of that agency says the results of its crash tests are good news for the driving public. Models from a wider range of vehicle types earn TOP SAFETY PICK, but there are no minicars in that category either. Mercedes-Benz has two, while Toyota, BMW and Ford Motor Co. have one each.

Crash tests have always been a key element in how the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety rates vehicles.

Over the last decade, vehicle safety has improved dramatically as automakers recognize that safety is a big selling point.

Forty-seven vehicles made the institute's second tier Top Safety Pick for 2018 after it added a requirement for good or acceptable headlights to qualify - down from 50 previous year. The Crosstrek and Forester earn Top Safety Pick, also with option front-crash prevention and specific headlights. The BRZ is the only Subaru model that doesn't qualify.

However, IIHS notes that the vast majority of the award-winners qualify only when optionally equipped because front crash prevention systems and acceptable or good headlights aren't often part of the base trims. This new test sends a vehicle into a barrier at 40 miles per hour with just 25 percent of the vehicle's front end overlapping the barrier on the passenger side.

"We developed this test when it became clear that some manufacturers were not paying attention to the passenger side", said Adrian Lund, IIHS president.

The first official passenger-side ratings were released in October, following research tests a year ago.

The Institute's headlight ratings also are relatively new, with the first ones being released in March 2016. Automakers have committed to making this technology standard by 2022. In order to meet the top ranking, and in some instances, simply being a "Top Pick", the vehicle must be upgraded. That list could grow, since IIHS has not yet reviewed all models and variations and plans to review more throughout 2018.

"The improvements in occupant protection have been incredible over the past decades", he said in a statement.
